Study the photographs of Dorothea Lange

Integration Focus: What is the reason for integrating these disciplines?

Social Studies: Study of the Great Depression; historical timelines; World War II, events occuring around the world at the time of her photos, ex "Migrant Mother".

Writing: Identify the setting, Revise draft for meaning and clarity; write a variety of expressive words that include sensory words and precise word choices.

Assessment Criteria:

The observable traits and dimensions of meeting the learning target—what it looks, sounds, or feels like when the student demonstrates this newly acquired knowledge or skill.

 

Evaluate and discuss Dorthea Lange's work using the elements and principles of art.


Students will use correct vocabulary of the principles and elements of art when evaluating and discussing Lange's work.


Emmulate her work with a similar pose and expression to try and tell the same story.

 


Students will be able to tell which photograph they are emmulating, how, and why. Art will be assessed on the extent to which they are able to capture the same emotion and follow the guidelines of the project.

Create original work with body and facial expression of a determined emotion. Place the picture in current day.


Students will experiment with photography and capturing emotion, expression, body language and other elements of art.


Generate a written statement of the event, emotion, and evaluation of one's own work.

What is the migrant woman thinking? What are here two children feeling and fearing?

Why has this picture become the most widely known photo of Dorothea Lange's work? Does she accomplish her goal in this photo? Is the photo balanced? How does she use value and light?

Describe the photo "White Angel Breadline"

What was happening in the world to cause this picture to evoke emotion?
