Arts Discipline:

Getting to know you

2nd

Theatre/Dance

Lesson Overview/Description:

This is an activity for the first few weeks of school when all the students are getting to know one another and I am creating a classroom community. Students will learn more about each other using "back to back" activity" in order to become comfortable talking with one another and not worrying about what the other person thinks. After doing the back to back activity, students will create mirror images of each other in order to get comfortable with using movements in the classroom.

1. Describe

2. Analyze

How do you get to know your friends?

What kinds of things do you talk about?

What do you like about your friends?

Why are friends important?

How would you get to know the people in your classroom?

How can you show someone that you are their friend?

3. Interpret

4. Evaluate

Why do you think that it is important to be nice to the people in your class?

How do you meet new people?

Learning Sequence: Indicate steps needed to achieve learning targets

1.

Teacher will play music with a steady beat. Students will walk around the classroom, not talking with anyone, and will stop by a classmate and be back to back with one another when the music stops. After the music stops, the teacher will give the students a topic to discuss, like what did they do over the summer vacation. Each student will take a turn telling their partner their answer. Both partners will be active listeners.

Check for understanding by: In-process assessment of student learning through questions, self reflection, teacher scan, peer sharing, checklist, or other assessment tools

2.

After both partners have had enough time to answer the prompt, the teacher will turn the music back on and the students will start walking again. When the music stops, the students must have a new partner. Teacher will give prompt and students will repeat the process. This should go on for about 10 minutes, giving the students a chance to talk to as many classmates as possible.

3.

Teacher will direct the students walk around the room and find a partner when the music stops. This must be a new partner that they haven't talked to. Teacher will tell the students that they are going to create a mirror image of one another. Person A will strike the first pose and person B will turn around and make the exact same image as person A.
