What did your project set out to do? What outcomes did you identify for your
project? |
Our objective was to create a community-wide art project. We wanted to assemble a mural to beautify the front of our building. And, we wanted to ensure that everyone, including students, teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers were involved in the process of creating the pieces. The big picture idea is that each small piece contributes to the whole, as in a community. |
| 2. What
did the project accomplish? Who was served and how did they benefit?
|
We accomplished a great deal in that every student rolled, designed, and painted at least on time. In addition, the faculty and volunteers created tiles to be a part of the murals. We had over 60 volunteers, including parents, neighbors, and students from the BSU art program. It was a great team effort. Teachers who had been trained by the artist took charge of teaching students about rolling and cutting tiles. Some helped guide the glazing process. Others helped transport the tiles for firing. Even more helped with assembling the final product. Community members donated supplies and time to install the murals. |
| 3. How
do you know that your project accomplished these things? What evaluation
methods did you use?
|
We know our project accomplished these things because we set out to involve the entire community, and we did. With all students, faculty, and many, many parents and community volunteers, we can say we were successful in showing the importance of the individual roll within the larger community. Also, we set out to create a piece of artwork, which we did. Ours is the first public art on display in the town of Star, so we reached beyond the boundaries of our own school to share with our entire area. |
4. How
will you share the results of your program with others?
(These might be other school personnel, parents, press/media, PTO/PTA,
local or state policy makers, etc.) |
|
We coordinated with our principal to use in-service time and faculty meetings to keep project information and training flowing to our teachers and staff all year. Also, throughout the year parents were updated via school and classroom newsletters. At completion, our project was featured in the Star newspaper and in the Idaho Statesman. In addition, it has been added to a guide detailing public art around the state.
