Telling Your Story

Develop a story about your project that you can share with others, as well as with the ICA. The story should be brief (two pages maximum), to the point, and understandable to a variety of audiences. Use the following questions to structure your story:

1. What did your project set out to do? What outcomes did you identify for your project?

Our plan was to allow students K-5 express their Social Studies concepts through dance. Ms. Jo Miller designed lessons that incoporated the Humanities standards of dance and the classroom teachers provided the background information for the Social Studies standards. Our students were already familiar with choreographed dance, but this allowed them the opportunity to create their own dance movements that displayed what information they had learned.
2. What did the project accomplish? Who was served and how did they benefit?

All students were able to experience dance as a way of communicating knowledge from kindergarten through fifth grade. In addition, our teachers were also given a lesson on how to use movement to practice and teach some basic skills, such as math facts. We danced the commutative property. This is something that each grade level can build upon. Ms. Miller also showed the teachers how to do a "follow the leader" dance that would bring quick control into our already existing classroom management.
3. How do you know that your project accomplished these things? What evaluation methods did you use?

Students could be heard all over the school discussing what they had learned during their time with Ms. Miller. Teachers also started convesations in the staff lounge about how they can use these techniques in their own classroom. Our Music and PE teachers evaluated the students while they were working with Ms. Miller using informal assessment. In addition, more teachers are interested in attending the Arts Powered Schools Institute this summer.
4. How will you share the results of your program with others?
(These might be other school personnel, parents, press/media, PTO/PTA,
local or state policy makers, etc.)

Some students will be performing for parents during an Honor Roll assembly. Our Music teacher, will be incorporating this into the upcoming grade level musicals. Some teachers are using strategies in their classroom that reinforce or build upon what was learned with Ms. Miller. Information to parents about this project is displayed in newsletters. Unfortunately, we do not have the permission from administration to display our pictures that were taken. We are putting together some Powerpoints that will be used in our classrooms, though.

Please attach photographs (please limit to 400 pixels wide) or other documentation that helps others to understand your project. Label the documentation with text that explains what it is and how it shows the project’s accomplishments.
