I
love teaching and I love the arts! However, with the daily pressures of
school in general, it's easy to lose the spirit of the creative processes inherent
in the arts. What a rejuvenating week I've had participating in quality
art experiences! I will take this joy of creation with me and alter my approach
in the classroom to accommodate the arts more fully. This institute is the
most valuable and priceless workshop I've ever been to, and I will tell all my
teacher friends about it in Moscow. |
Thank
you for taking such pains to plan this wonderful week! Your hospitality,
choice of artists, and scheduling made it so easy to free up my inhibitions, create
art, and enjoy the journey. I've met other teachers and gleaned from those
conversations as well. This is a fabulous Institute! |

This
week leaves me feeling refreshed & renewed with an excitement to go out &
learn more about arts myself so that I can help my kids more. I find myself
wanting to go take a drama class for myself & also to make my teaching that
much more powerful. This was an amazing experience for me. Sign me
up for next year! |
The food at the dining hall & all other locations was
wonderfulÉfresh & delicious. You brought us a wonderful assortment of
artists & styles. Having the artists around during most events, including
meals, was great. You got to talk to t hem & bounce around ideas.
I only wish I could have taken more (or all) of the workshops! I wish more
people would have taken advantage of the wonderful evening experiences!
(I live in Boise, but chose to stay for that reason.) |

everything thanks! |
I
loved the puppets! At first I was unsure about the art of puppetry-now I
can see the beauty & art and I have a much better idea of how to incorporate
this art into my reading program. The instructors were excellent.
They helped me discover the beauty! I loved this class! The music
(Sound & Art) experience was very unique. I learned a great deal.
The sounds were very interesting and my students will love doing the same activities
I had the opportunity to do! I really loved this class! However, I
would have loved to receive one of the instruments that I made. |

The

Jo. I was scared to death to dance but she was so encouraging and made me
feel more comfortable. I appreciate her ideas and will definitely use them! |

This
is a renewing and energizing experience. Thank you for providing the journal-mine
is almost full. Eric Booth said, 80% of what children learn is what we
are. I feel that we have grown with this experience and will return that to our
students. Also, good contacts have been made. |

Building
puppets was one of the most fun-informative classes I have ever taken. I
love the theatre aspects from Dwayne and Jeffery-they are awesome. Thank
you- I loved my music class-but wish it would have been something more than
the two objects. I enjoyed listening to Eric Booth in the morning session-his
enthusiasm and positive-yet realistic teaching and observations-I would like to
hear him again sometime. Of course, the food was great. The people
wonderful. I plan to communicate with Dan Senne and Eric Booth regarding
our school-their thoughts-etc. I appreciate the availability of sources
we are able to use-or access. That will help us throughout the year-
|
If
we are really talking about project based classrooms-with arts as a big part?
Integration? The "what is it like to be human?" If
you want a good example of arts int. check into Scottish Storyline.
Please do contact me-Nampa or call Lincoln Elementary and contact Stephanie
Van Orsow. Hugely successful project based-with the burning question-etc.
If you don't know about Scottish Storyline-it is fabulous-I talked to Eric Booth-he
thinks its great too. Thanks to SRA to9o-we got a bunch of good stuff-Jan

I
have had many "ah ha" moments this week. Many times, I found myself
choked up by the emotion I felt for what I was learning-personally and professionally.
For our residency, we developed the essential question we will explore with our
students this year-"what is beauty?" In my heart and mind, I will
begin each activity next year remembering and bringing forward the beauty I discovered
here. |
Is
there any way to showcase the slideshow or other pieces of this institute around

One
of the biggest concepts I took in was from Booth: experience before information.
This turns upside-down my DBAE approach to teaching fine art but I'm excited to
experiment with showing "the print" last. An insight-my 1st reaction
to a particular workshop was doubtful, suspicious, and didn't expect much.
But after giving it a chance, turned out to be rich, deep, expressive & surprising.

About
presenters=am very impressed that they attended everything that we did.
*The SRA commercial booth was very generous. *Food service=excellent.
*Dorms=pretty shabby (but quite comfortable & adequate) compared to the rest
of the campus. *Artist-in-Residence =they were all friendly & approachable.
*Project-based learning class, necessary, not much new. *Evening events-wow.
Now I know why people keep returning to this conference-I do too! |

The
examples given from the Donnell School during the project planning time were often
antithetical to Eric Booth's examples of best practice. A lot of them seemed
to be "fraction dance" examples. They were very surface oriented
and not intrinsically motivated. The watercolor class focused very little
on the process and a lot on the product. I felt very frustrated because
I really just wanted to try out different techniques and be allowed to experiment
without being forced to make a product. The puppet making class was amazing.
Dwayne and Jeffery packed so much opportunity into their limited time. I
felt like I am able to take so much back to share with my students. |

It
was an enlightening experience in team building, leadership & connecting manually
to the work. It was unpleasant but valuable. |
It
will be a shame to see this Institute go by the "wayside." It's
a critical need for our community. It is an event our staff looks forward
to each year. If there is anything that we can do as a community to help
raise awareness, etc., please let participants of the workshop know if there is
anything. |

There
is a power in being able to have experiences both within a school team and with
others from outside your school. The informal conversations held during
arts events, dinner, etc. made the learning applicable. Had this been held
as a workshop 9-3 I do not believe this collaborative thinking would have occurred. |
1-I
have taken Duane's theatre class both years. What makes his workshops so
valuable is that he is very explicit in how you can use the vocabulary, techniques,
etc. directly in the classroom as well as in the performance of interpretation
of a piece. He also directly tied in his workshop to one of the evening
events both years to allow for reflective discussion. 2-The planning time
is valuable for school teams that have a residency, but for those w/o a residency
or who attend on their own are really let go. Having some people from the
State Dept. to meet with these people on lessons or unit plans would help them
apply learning back in their classroom the following year.
3. I think those schools of
residences from year before should present their experience the next year (good
& bad)-need to have opportunities for artists to discuss when possible as
Maria Collins did! |

I
loved the whole artist experience! This is my first ArtsPowered Summer Institute!
My studio classes both gave me an artist experience even though I have never considered
myself a visual artist. They have both changed me! I want to continue
to "dabble" in watercolor-it was very relaxing. I also am more
confident as a dancer-I love to dance and I am good! Also-thank you for
giving a small school district like ours to have the opportunity of a paid artist
in residence-which our school could never have afforded. |
All
of my instructors-*Helen (watercolor), Ann Miller & Tom Parker were very positive
& encouraging & Helpful. With Helen's & Ann's genuine positive
feedback-I am leaving this workshop thinking I'm a dancer! And I need to continue
and develop my water coloring talents/1 This Institute was well organized-even
to the detail of complimentary Italian sodas & treats @ the coffee house!

The
group of artists assembled here this week was a wonderful mix and, in my opinion,
the most easily accessible group so far at this conference. My artist sessions

Eric
Booth-every day the time went by very quickly. Many of the things Eric present
caused me to reflect deeply on important issues. I re-evaluated many of
my teaching philosophies, and the things he spoke on have caused me to change
the way I design & present my lessons. |
I
would have liked to have more direct connections to curriculum & lessons
in our studio times. The studios were a great arts experience, I just felt
they didnÕt make the strong connection to the 3rd space that Eric spoke about.

I
loved being able to have an arts experience because I have a natural love for
the arts, that Eric Booth mentioned. I only wish there was just a little
more time spent on how to integrate the lessons learned into my classroom.
Booth was awesome for giving ideas and showing the process of "verbs"
in the classroom. However, I think there was a disconnect of those lessons
and the break away classes. I do not want to lose the artistic experience
at all; maybe just enhance it by connecting it to the classroom. I loved
this week and would come again. This is just a suggestion. |

Booth's encouragement to have experiences before information. To
be aware of extrinsic rewards-they can rob the innate curiosity to learn and grow.
Finally, to find a "third space Eric Booth introduced a way of thinking/exploration
that could make all the difference in engaging my students. I am excited
to return to my classroom in the fall. within my year plan. |
We
had conflicting messages-Eric suggested a shared time (3rd space) between arts
& academics. Studio time focused on arts for art's purposes. Even
though this was fun and interesting-more academic connections would have expanded

Creating
an atmosphere in which the arts can flourish-with Eric Booth validated my thoughts
about how the "process" is just as important as the "product."
How we 'get there' may be many trails and paths, but we will 'get there'-by
utilizing our style of learning. Engaging the student before giving
information is great! and....ways to do that are highly appreciated.

I
was so reinforced by the Eric Booth presentation. The phrase that was emphasized
in our class was "engagement before information." I was really
impressed by his strategy that a short space or pause using another type of energy
is important to release pressure so that the class can go on. The intimacy
of the group really grew as people in class shared their "aha"s with
Eric and each other. We had so much we learned that it was really difficult
to make a choice about what to present. I absolutely loved the "sound"
workshop-he's our artist for our workshop. I've been collecting pot lids
all week. How exciting. |
The
camaraderie was super! The extra time to work on projects was great.

I
was impressed by how lang. arts flowed naturally from art: In Eric's session
& in Puppetry & the Hikui mine is below. I especially loved the
spontaneous expressions of & appreciation of talent: sing-a-longs skaters
in the tennis court. Lots of joy & laughter-in unstructured times. The
Risk Free message is so important. I liked the ways that was demonstrated
by the artists & conference leaders. The dining room was fertile ground
for interacting & sharing among folks who otherwise couldn't get the chance

felt that I was given many seeds from which to grow integrated lessons.
I appreciate not getting written lesson plans (scripted) but instead given
the tools to build my own lessons for my specific curriculum and student population.
This didn't put more on my plate-it allowed me to take some off. |

The
Arts should never be removed from the classroom curriculum!! It truly enhances
the learning process, and should be incorporated throughout each day! My
insight? Even "little ones" should have an exposure to a wide
variety of music genres, in non-threatening ways. |

were treated with such respect, and so well-taken care of!! This doesn't
happen to teachers that often. This workshop was very professional

It
is vital to the future of our nation that the arts are accessible to all students.
Our country's greatness is due to the creativity and inventiveness of its citizens.
We, as teachers, are given the core, pivotal ride in children's lives to nurture
and foster these seeds of creativity. Arts Powered Schools has given us
the knowledge and techniques we will utilize back in the classroom to help our
students discover the Renoir, Chopin-the creativity in their heart & soul.
Each year I look at the sea of shining faces and wonder what gifts they have to
bring to the world...thank you for helping me to help them become what they are
meant to be. |

We were able to share experiences from last year, make plans for the coming year

I had flashes of "this is the way my students must feel at times in class."
This was an important experience for me. *The most exciting moment was when

The
ArtsPowered School of 2006 has been one of the most rewarding and inspiring classes
I have taken. When we're focused on a specific topic, we're learning and
when there is down time at lunch or breaksÉwe're discussing activities and ideas
to take back to our school. It was a non-stop engaging week with purposeful
information! It was also a wonderful way to meet other teachers from all
over Idaho. |
It
was much more than I had expected. I had never gone to the ArtsPowered
School and I was quite surprised at how enriching it was. I've taken so
many summer classes that I felt were a waste of time and money as well as lacked
"relevancy" that I didn't have high expectations. What a fantastic
surprise to take a class that "superseded" my expectations. I
will go back to my school wit a wealth of ideas of art integration!! Thank

The
music class was particularly helpful for me. I enjoyed seeing found objects
become instruments. The fact that they were sturdy and simple made them
feel accessible to everyone. By the end of the week I finally began to accept
the fact that there was no right or wrong answer for playing the instrument.
Anything I wanted to do was good enough. This kind of freedom allowed me
to explore more readily and ultimately forced me to be trusting of myself &
more creative. I noticed some teachers did not see connections to their
classroom. A period of brainstorming ideas for application might have been
helpful. |
Eric
Booth was perfect. Bring him back!! Or someone like him with a broad base
of experience. I wanted him to expand on the specifics of what makes a good
project & how to process creating one. We did talk about this in the
afternoon-I wanted more info from him. Bring back the Shakespeare fest.
So So fun. Food was great! Thank you for spoiling us so! I felt
that the thought that went into the conference was so abundant and I appreciated
the efforts. |
